WHAT ARE ACEs, PCEs, AND PACEs?

Many children and adolescents around the world experience difficult, stressful, or even traumatic events such as physical, sexual, or emotional violence, forced migration, stigma, bullying, and poverty. These events are known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and can negatively affect health and wellbeing in both children and adults.

But not everything is negative. In childhood we also live positive experiences, like feeling cared for, being heard, having a good friend, or enjoying hobbies and sports. These situations are positive for health and wellbeing and are known as positive childhood experiences (PCEs).

The combination of adverse and positive childhood experiences is known as PACEs.

OUR PROCESS

Follow the journey phase by phase.

1 search
We designed and conducted a survey with children and young people between 10–24 years old in Bogotá. Through this survey we could paint a general landscape of what positive and adverse events children often experience.

PHASE 1

Quantitative data generation

We interviewed a group of children and young people who responded the survey to better understand the impact of PACEs on their lives. Participants spoke of their own experiences, perspectives and views and the way in which they create resources and opportunities to promote their own wellbeing and health.

Qualitative interviews

We analyzed information from phases 1 and 2 to understand how these experiences affect mental health.

Integrated analysis

We ran creative workshops with music and sound; children and young people proposed solutions and created a song. We also held sessions with NGOs about possible interventions.
